November 2008 Meeting Minutes
CTA Rep meeting, Tuesday November 18th, 2008.
Start time: 4:15
Workman’s comp case: We have been paying attorney fees for a member that was denied compensation for workman’s comp. We have won the case and workman’s comp is now paying all of her bills. It is things like this that having coverage is so important. People forget this and this will save the member $1,300.
Maricopa County Elections Board and Flyer: PEA has posted a flyer stating that we were a political action committee and that we were not being truthful to our members. This is not true and we are getting this taken care of. We have never been a political action committee and have never given money to any candidate or cause despite what PEA may say.
New school board member: Hal Borhauer is our new board member.
Tape recorders and their use: CTA has 3 tape recorders that any member can use to record meetings with parents, principals, other teachers etc…Everyone has a legal right to record meetings. Let Holly know if you need to borrow one. We are also paying a transcriptionist to transcribe a tape of a meeting so we can have an accurate record.
Update from school board meeting: Budget projection. The district is 600 children less, so that means less money. The district is going to be costing out all of the programs in the district, to see where money can be trimmed. We have achieved some good savings by being conscious of lights, temperature, etc. It has also helped that fuel costs have dropped. This, however, will probably not be enough.
Good of the order: Primary teachers are asking when the student top out is, and when a new teacher will be hired. There is also a problem with a paper shortage. Teachers are being limited on how much paper they can use. This will be brought to the attention of district people.
Meeting was adjourned at 5:00
